The Dreaded Food Journal

How do I feel about journaling my food?

I don't like it. I didn't have lapband surgery to have to journal.

And I never really did for the first 160 pounds I lost. Oh, I would get a wild hair every now and then and journal online....but that would last as long as a...as long as something very short.

But, in effort to really see what I have been eating, I started journaling this month. It will not be something I continue for long. But it has been interesting. To journal accurately, it means that I have to measure my food and know my serving size. No more pouring granola in a bag and questimating if it's a cup. No more tossing cheese into a dish and saying, "oh...that's about 100 calories".

It's been a good lesson.

Karin posted her system for journaling. Here is a picture of my little journal. I keep track of my calories expended during exercise as well.

And that's that. Not too exciting. But I wanted to share.

  1. I used to look up and write down all my calories but I now use myfitnesspal.com and LOVE it. Super easy!!

  2. I hate journaling as well. Sometimes, though, it's a real eye opener. I journaled throughout December to help me get through the holidays and it worked. I didn't lose much but I did lose. It's not an accountability tool for me as much as it is a way for me to compile data to spot trends and see where I may be messing up. I loved your previous post by the way. You always seem to know just what to say.

  3. That looks a lot like mine. I got a little notebook from Barnes & noble that is really thin and slips right in my purse. My notes it is look a lot like you have.

  4. I hate journaling so much.. (maybe it's the being accountable part that is teh big turn-off.. go figure..). I loved yours though .. especially the "Crap" entry! Also, it was interesting to me to see what you're eating, and that I'm not the only one who has a sweet treat every day. I didn't do that when I was heavier, but now .. a day without chocolate is like a day without a smiling newborn baby chick. :)

  6. When I started journaling my food, it really opened my eyes to how much I'm eating. I don't do it all the time, but it helps when I feel like my weight loss is stalling. Good luck!

  7. Journaling used to be like a gun shot to the head; i.hated.it. But now, I can't live w/o journaling. It's the accountability I need!

  8. I really need to get back to journaling myself. Maybe I can get this cookie demon under control ;-). Good job Amy! Love the "crap" entry too!! At least you are holding yourself accountable for EVERYTHING you eat.

  11. The only time I lose weight is when I journal. It is a truth diary and writing it and reading it are hard but necessary for me. I use one side of the paper for food and the other side of the paper to note my mood, how I feel (headache, PMS, etc) and workouts. Sometimes it helps track migraine trends or helps me understand why I can't stop eating (PMS). Good for you...

  12. I did well for a long time but then I just got sick of it. I need to do it again - get back on the tracking my food train. I also know I need to CHANGE IT UP! I need to find the places in my week that I can work out. Doesn't matter that I so much else going on.....we are all different, you're right. With different circumstances and ..... If I want it to be bad enough, it will be!

  13. I use myfitnesspal.com as well. There's a android/mobile app that allows you to scan the bar code on anything you eat that has one and zing...it gets added to your food diary.
