High Cholesterol? You Can Suck My Right Elbow Ma'am

This morning I went to our annual health fair here at work. They take your blood pressure. Stick your finger and get your cholesterol, etc.

And do you know what they told me? Your cholesterol should below 200 and mine was 216! WHAT? I don't hardly ever eat fried food! I don't eat eggs. I eat pretty healthy (okay, minus this weekend but she said that wouldn't matter). I was just suprised! I blame genetics.

I also decided last night that I was going to lose 4 pounds this week and see 205 on the scale. Just wanted to let you guys know that was my plan.

I finished reading Julia Child's My Life in France. I really love Meryl Streeps portrayl of her in Julie Julia...and wanted to read more about her story. It was pretty good. Most of the food she cooked sounds beyond gross to my very uncultured midwest palate...but she seemed like a very quirky unconvential woman.

  2. My mom has high cholesterol, never eats fried foods, weighs 135 pounds (she's 5'8). It's all about genetics. It's interesting because I'm planning on making an appt with my primary to get blood tests and was wondering if my numbers would have come down, or whether genetically I'm doomed!!!!!

  3. I was gonna say the same thing as nicole if you are not fasting it is not very accurate. Im sure i would love the recipes from your book. my palate is used to French food, everything tastes quite plain to me in the UK.

  4. You might want to go in a get a full lipid test done. It is a fasting test and the most accurate. The finger stick test is more of an indicator that something could be wrong from what I understand. Plus it will tell you the full picture HDLs, LDLs, Trigs and help you figure out what you can do to improve.

  5. Boo high cholesterol!
I know what you mean about Julia's recipes. UGH - I have the same boring Midwestern Palate as you. I watched the movie thinking...ewww. But it is a great story.
I'll be cheering for you and the 4 lbs! You can do it! :)

  7. Same story here - two parents - both thin - eat healthy and are active. My mom's cholesterol is so high it's off the charts! Dad too. I'm pretty sure that's not good news for me! Boohoo!

  8. Yeppers, I'm with those that say a fasting check is the only accurate check..... so don't worry your pretty little head about it ~ and besides only 16 over?? Not to worry! ;-)

  9. I am with everyone else...you have to get a fasting test done.

Genetics, genetics, genetics. Mine is high, my mom's was high, her mom's was high...and I am the only fat one. Sometimes diet and exercise can help but I tested that theory out when I had my surgery and stopped taking my medication. Two months later and my cholesterol is back up again. Needless-to-say, I am back on the meds.

  10. I agree with the others, don't stress about it too much until you get a fasting cholesterol and find out your LDL to HDL ratio. Sometimes the ratio and numbers for those are more important that the overall number.

  11. (L)ethal and (H)ealthy. Yeah, you really have to know your HDLs vs your LDLs. I'm considered high-"ish" at around 180-185, but my HDLs are really high because I eat a lot of fish.

Uh..Oh... I know someone who doesn't like fishies...

  12. My friend teased me endlessly after we saw Julie and Julia since I shun butter and that's all that Julia Child cooked with and still lived to be, what, 90 something?

  13. I loved that book!! Julia Child had such an interesting life. I got Mastering the Art of French Cooking as a b-day present and am dying to make the Beef Bourgignon. . though I'm a little worried about getting stuck on it!

Weird about the cholesterol . . I would have thought it would be perfect! I need to get mine done too. . good reminder.
